Northrop Grumman Corp. secured a U.S. Army contract to develop the second phase of its Improved Threat Detection System (ITDS) on May 4, 2026. The award follows successful first‑phase flight tests that demonstrated the system’s ability to detect a wide range of threats, including unmanned aircraft, loitering munitions, and small‑caliber weapons, using the company’s Advanced Tactical Hostile Engagement Awareness (ATHENA) sensor.

The ITDS platform is designed for integration into Army rotary‑wing aircraft. The contract will enable the ATHENA sensor to be installed on the MV‑75 Cheyenne II—named in April 2026—and the AH‑64 Apache, expanding Northrop Grumman’s aircraft‑survivability portfolio and reinforcing the Army’s modernization efforts.

From a business perspective, the contract strengthens the Defense Systems segment, which generated $8.00 billion in revenue in fiscal 2025. The additional work is expected to contribute to future revenue growth and support the company’s strategy of delivering integrated mission‑systems solutions to the U.S. government.

Trevis Crane, Northrop Grumman’s survivability development programs director, said, “Through our strong partnership with the Army, we have developed a state‑of‑the‑art aircraft survivability system that meets mission needs in the most challenging threat environments. ITDS and the advanced situational awareness capabilities of its ATHENA sensor are vital for ensuring successful missions and safe returns.”

The contract win comes amid a favorable defense‑spending environment and heightened focus on countering advanced aerial threats. By securing a multi‑phase agreement, Northrop Grumman positions itself to capture a growing share of the aircraft‑survivability market and to leverage its expertise in integrated threat‑detection technology.
