Nokia Oyj has secured a multi‑year contract to supply Virgin Media O2 with its latest‑generation AirScale Radio Access Network (RAN) portfolio for a 5G deployment that will span the United Kingdom. The agreement covers ultra‑capacity modular baseband units, energy‑efficient Massive MIMO radios and AI‑enabled baseband platforms, positioning Virgin Media O2 to improve spectral efficiency, coverage and throughput while preparing for future 5G‑Advanced capabilities.
The deal reinforces Nokia’s strategic shift toward high‑margin mobile infrastructure and AI‑enabled network solutions. It expands Nokia’s footprint in the UK market and strengthens its competitive position against rivals such as Ericsson and Huawei. The contract aligns with Nokia’s 2026 guidance of EUR 2.0‑2.5 billion comparable operating profit and a 6‑8 % CAGR in Network Infrastructure net sales, and complements the company’s recent acquisition of Infinera, which bolsters its optical network capabilities needed for AI traffic.
The agreement is a key component of Virgin Media O2’s £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan, which aims to expand coverage, improve reliability and boost speeds, especially in high‑demand areas such as transport hubs, stadiums and rural locations. By partnering with Nokia, Virgin Media O2 can accelerate its 5G rollout, enhance performance and meet growing demand for high‑quality mobile services.
Mark Atkinson, Head of Radio Access Network at Nokia, said: "We are delighted to deepen our longstanding partnership with Virgin Media O2 through this important new 5G RAN deal. Our AirScale portfolio is designed to deliver the performance, efficiency, and flexibility required for the UK's future connectivity needs. We look forward to supporting Virgin Media O2 in building one of the most advanced and reliable 5G Advanced networks in the country." Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2, added: "As we continue to evolve and enhance our award‑winning mobile network with our Mobile Transformation Plan, Nokia remains a key strategic partner in helping us deliver reliable connectivity to our customers. This new agreement allows us to accelerate our 5G rollout, improve performance, and ensure we meet growing demand for high‑quality mobile services both today and in the future."
