China’s Ministry of Commerce announced on January 28, 2026 that it had granted approval for the first imports of Nvidia’s H200 AI chips, the company’s most powerful accelerator currently available for export to China. The approval covers more than 400,000 units and was issued during Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s visit to Beijing.

The H200 is built on Nvidia’s Hopper architecture and delivers 141 GB of HBM3e memory with a 4.8 TB/s bandwidth, making it ideal for large‑scale AI training and inference. The approved shipments will be supplied to ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent, the three largest Chinese technology firms, giving them access to high‑performance hardware that was previously unavailable.

The decision opens a potential $50 billion‑per‑year revenue opportunity for Nvidia in China, a market that has been largely closed by U.S. export controls. The approval is subject to conditions that require Nvidia to comply with Chinese regulations and to balance the use of foreign technology with domestic production, reflecting China’s dual strategy of leveraging advanced imports while developing its own chip industry.

For Nvidia, the approval expands its addressable customer base in a key growth region and strengthens its position against domestic competitors such as Huawei’s Ascend chips. The company’s management highlighted the strategic importance of the move, noting that the H200’s capabilities will enable Chinese firms to accelerate AI development and reduce reliance on older, less powerful hardware.

During his visit, Jensen Huang emphasized that the AI chip sector could generate $50 billion in revenue over the coming years, underscoring Nvidia’s confidence in the long‑term demand for high‑performance AI infrastructure. Analysts have noted that while the approval is a positive step, investors remain cautious due to ongoing U.S.–China trade tensions and the regulatory conditions attached to the license.
