Mistral AI, a French AI startup, has secured $830 million in debt financing to purchase 13,800 Nvidia GPUs and construct a new data‑center facility in Bruyères‑le‑Châtel, near Paris. The facility is slated to begin operations in the second quarter of 2026 and will support both training and inference workloads for the company’s AI models.
The debt package is backed by a consortium of seven banks, including BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole CIB, HSBC, La Banque Postale, MUFG, Natixis CIB, and Bpifrance. The financing allows Mistral to avoid equity dilution while scaling its infrastructure, and the partnership with Bpifrance underscores the French government’s interest in fostering European AI sovereignty.
Mistral’s move follows a rapid rise in annual recurring revenue, which crossed $400 million in February 2026 from just $20 million a year earlier. The company has also raised €1.7 billion in a Series C round in September 2025 and €600 million in June 2024, valuing it at €11.7 billion and €5.8 billion respectively. In addition to the Paris facility, Mistral is building a 1.4 GW AI campus near Paris in a joint venture with Bpifrance, MGX, and Nvidia, and has announced a €1.2 billion investment in Sweden with EcoDataCenter.
The debt financing represents a significant new source of demand for Nvidia’s high‑performance GPUs, with each unit costing between $27,000 and $40,000. While the deal signals strong confidence in the European AI market, it also introduces debt‑service risk for a company that has not yet achieved profitability. The financing positions Mistral to compete with U.S. giants such as OpenAI and Anthropic while meeting growing demand for autonomous AI solutions in Europe.
"Expanding our infrastructure in Europe is essential to empowering our customers and ensuring that innovation and autonomy in AI remain a priority in Europe," said Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral AI. "As governments and enterprises actively seek to build their own customised AI environment, we are scaling our infrastructure in Europe. Mistral AI is the one‑stop shop for AI innovation and autonomy."
