NexGen Energy Ltd. (TSX: NXE) received final federal approval on March 5 2026 when the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission approved the company’s Environmental Assessment and issued a Licence to Prepare Site and Construct for its 100‑percent‑owned Rook I uranium project in Saskatchewan’s Athabasca Basin. The licence removes the last regulatory hurdle, allowing the company to move from permitting to construction.

The Rook I project is a generational development‑stage uranium mine that will produce up to 30 million pounds of uranium per year. Construction is slated to begin in summer 2026, with a 48‑month build schedule that would bring the mine into production by 2030. The project’s location in the Athabasca Basin, combined with NexGen’s full ownership and a completed Final Investment Decision, positions the company to supply a significant share of global uranium demand—potentially over 20 % of current global supply and more than 50 % of western‑world supply.

The approval de‑risks the project and signals that NexGen’s safety and environmental plans meet all federal requirements. It also strengthens the company’s role in supporting nuclear power as a low‑carbon energy source, aligning with global decarbonization and energy‑security goals. NexGen’s ESG commitments—working closely with local Indigenous communities and maintaining high environmental standards—are reinforced by the licence, enhancing the project’s social license to operate.

Founder and CEO Leigh Curyer said, "Nuclear is the chosen energy to supply global economic growth. NexGen is the foundational key to fueling that growth." The company is well‑capitalized, has advanced discussions for project financing, and has positioned its workforce, procurement, and engineering teams to begin construction immediately after the licence is granted.

NexGen’s Rook I project is the largest development‑stage uranium project in Canada and one of the most advanced in the world. The project’s scale, combined with the regulatory green light, places NexGen in a strong position to meet rising demand for uranium driven by nuclear power expansion and the need for diversified supply chains.
