Orion Energy Systems (NASDAQ: OESX) has secured a $4 million contract to install 105 DC‑fast electric‑vehicle charging stations for the Boston Public Schools (BPS) system, with the work to be carried out by its Voltrek division. The project will place charging infrastructure at the Freeport Bus Yard and other key BPS sites, supporting the district’s goal of electrifying its 750‑bus fleet.
The new contract builds on a $6.5 million deal announced in August 2025 that added 90 charging stations, including 51 at the Freeport Bus Yard. By adding 15 more stations, Orion is deepening its long‑term partnership with BPS and reinforcing its strategy to bundle lighting, charging, and maintenance services for public‑sector customers. The Voltrek division’s turnkey approach—design, installation, and ongoing maintenance—provides BPS with a single point of contact and predictable operating costs.
Financially, the $4 million award adds a sizable upfront installation fee and a recurring maintenance stream that will help Orion offset its recent revenue decline of 15.2% over the past three years. Gross margin has improved from 23.1% in Q2 FY2025 to 31.0% in Q2 FY2026, and the company has narrowed its net loss while achieving positive adjusted EBITDA in recent quarters. The contract’s predictable cash flow aligns with Orion’s raised FY2026 revenue guidance and supports its goal of sustaining profitability through 2026.
CEO Sally Washlow emphasized the significance of the win: “Orion/Voltrek is proud to be a reliable long‑term provider of EV charging, infrastructure and maintenance to BPS, one of the most innovative public school districts in America.” She added that the company’s “demonstrated ability to provide turnkey solutions for EV charging, infrastructure and maintenance” is “critical to the escalating electrification needs of fleet managers.”
The deal underscores the broader growth of the U.S. EV‑charging market, which is projected to expand at roughly 8% annually. BPS’s commitment to electrifying its fleet places it among the largest public‑sector customers in the Northeast, and Orion’s expanded presence in the region positions it to capture additional contracts in the public‑sector and commercial markets. The contract also signals confidence in Orion’s integrated electrical infrastructure strategy, which has been a key driver of its recent turnaround in profitability and its ability to secure high‑value, long‑term service agreements.
