Petrobras Raises Diesel Distributor Prices by 0.38 Reais per Liter Effective March 14, 2026

Petrobras announced a 0.38‑reais per liter increase for diesel sold to distributors, effective March 14, 2026. The hike follows a global oil shock that widened the gap between domestic and international benchmarks.

The price increase is a response to rising international oil prices driven by geopolitical tensions, notably the U.S.–Israeli conflict with Iran, which pushed Brent crude above $100 per barrel. Petrobras aims to offset the cost impact on its downstream operations by aligning domestic diesel prices more closely with international benchmarks.

Historically, Petrobras has adjusted diesel prices several times in 2025, raising them in February and cutting them in May. The current increase marks a return to a higher pricing level after a brief cut, reflecting the company’s strategy to balance cost recovery with market competitiveness.

Management has emphasized that the company is assessing the international scenario before deciding on further price adjustments and that it is not under political pressure. CEO Magda Chambriard has stated that Petrobras follows a pricing policy adopted in 2023 that considers internal production costs and competitor prices rather than a strict import parity model.

The Brazilian government has implemented tax cuts and subsidy programs to cushion consumers from higher fuel prices, including zeroing federal taxes on diesel imports and sales. These measures are expected to moderate the impact of the distributor price increase on retail diesel prices.

Petrobras reported strong financial results for 2025, with significant net income and revenue growth, and robust EBITDA, indicating a solid financial position to manage price volatility. The diesel price adjustment is therefore part of a broader strategy to maintain profitability while navigating global market conditions.
