Avangrid Inc. has begun commercial operations at its Daybreak Solar and Bakeoven Solar facilities in Wasco County, Oregon, adding a combined 269 MW of renewable capacity to the Portland General Electric (PGE) grid. Daybreak Solar delivers 189 MW DC (140 MW AC) while Bakeoven Solar supplies 80 MW DC (60 MW AC), bringing the total new solar output to 269 MW DC and roughly 200 MW AC.
The commissioning of these two projects marks a key milestone in Avangrid’s U.S. renewable portfolio, which now exceeds 10.5 GW of generating capacity nationwide. It also supports PGE’s aggressive clean‑energy agenda, which includes a target of 80 % greenhouse‑gas‑emission reduction by 2030 and net‑zero emissions by 2040. While PGE’s public communications reference a 45 % non‑emitting energy goal, the company’s broader strategy focuses on increasing the share of renewable generation to meet its 27 % renewable requirement for 2026 and to accelerate the transition to a zero‑emission grid.
Beyond the power output, the projects have generated tangible economic benefits for Wasco County. Construction created more than 300 jobs, and the facilities are projected to generate approximately $40 million in tax revenue over their operational life. Avangrid has also implemented solar grazing, partnering with a local sheep rancher to manage vegetation around the panels, reducing wildfire risk and lowering maintenance costs.
Avangrid CEO Jose Antonio Miranda said the projects “bring new jobs, modern infrastructure, and a more resilient power grid for Oregon.” He added that the partnership with PGE and Intel “delivers a new source of reliable power that will energize Oregon’s communities and industries for decades to come.”
The Daybreak and Bakeoven projects are the first commercial‑scale solar farms in Wasco County and illustrate the rapid growth of solar development in Oregon, where 2.6 GW of new PV installations are forecast over the next five years. Iberdrola, Avangrid’s parent company, plans to invest €16 billion in the U.S. by 2028, positioning Avangrid as a leading renewable developer in the region.
