Roblox Introduces Age‑Based Accounts and Expanded Parental Controls

Roblox announced the launch of two new age‑based accounts—Roblox Kids for users aged 5‑8 and Roblox Select for users aged 9‑15—scheduled to roll out in early June 2026. The move follows the company’s January 2026 implementation of a mandatory facial age‑check for chat access and is part of a broader child‑safety strategy.

Roblox Kids will limit game access to titles rated minimal or mild maturity and will disable communication by default, while Roblox Select will allow access to moderate‑maturity games and retain default communication settings that can be further restricted by parents. Users 16 and older will continue to experience the current platform, with access to all features except content rated 18+.

The new accounts aim to reduce regulatory risk and improve safety while preserving engagement for older users. The company expects the rollout to increase operational costs through investments in age verification, content review, and enforcement. The tighter controls may introduce friction that could reduce time spent or spending on the platform, but the company believes a safer environment will support long‑term retention and attract advertisers.

Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer, said the system is designed to create “safer and more civil” experiences and to shift how games are discovered as children grow. Founder and CEO David Baszucki emphasized that safety is the company’s highest priority and that the new accounts are part of its mission to become the world’s healthiest platform for users of all ages.

Roblox has faced lawsuits and regulatory scrutiny over child safety, and the company’s stock has traded near a 52‑week low. Investors have expressed concerns about safety and regulatory compliance, so the announcement is likely to be viewed positively as a step toward addressing those risks, though near‑term costs could weigh on performance.

The rollout will begin in early June 2026, and Roblox will monitor engagement, safety metrics, and cost impacts closely as it implements the new age‑based framework.
