Rigetti Computing announced that it has sold a 9‑qubit Novera quantum processing unit (QPU) to the University of Saskatchewan’s Centre for Quantum Topology and Applications (quanTA). The QPU, shipped in March 2026, will serve as the core of the university’s first quantum computing system and will enable hands‑on research in quantum materials, algorithms and architecture.
The Novera QPU is Rigetti’s first commercially available device, featuring a 9‑qubit chip with tunable couplers for fast two‑qubit operations. While the sale price was not disclosed, the device is priced at $900,000 and represents a tangible revenue stream for Rigetti. The transaction aligns with the company’s strategy of expanding its quantum computing ecosystem through institutional partnerships and demonstrates the commercial viability of its chiplet‑based technology.
Rigetti’s 2025 financial results showed revenue of $7.1 million, a 34% decline from 2024, and a GAAP net loss of $216.2 million. The company held $589.8 million in cash at the end of 2025. Although the sale of a single 9‑qubit QPU is modest relative to overall revenue, it validates Rigetti’s technology in a research setting and may pave the way for larger deployments and additional revenue opportunities.
"By providing hands‑on access to real quantum computing hardware, academic institutions like USask are enabling students and researchers to pursue groundbreaking advances in quantum science and technology. We are delighted that USask has selected a Rigetti Novera QPU for their quanTA Centre and congratulate them on this exciting new phase of quantum technology exploration and innovation," said Dr. Subodh Kulkarni, CEO of Rigetti Computing.
The acquisition is part of a broader Canadian quantum initiative supported by federal and provincial funding. The University of Saskatchewan’s quanTA Centre will use the Novera QPU to conduct research in quantum materials, algorithms and architecture, potentially leading to breakthroughs that could inform future commercial quantum systems.
