Raytheon, a business unit of RTX Corporation, completed the first flight test of its RAIVEN® Staring sensor system on a UH‑60 Black Hawk helicopter on April 15 2026. The test demonstrated the system’s ability to map urban landscapes, marshes, and coastlines in zero‑illumination conditions while delivering 270‑degree situational awareness.
"This test showcases the RAIVEN Staring system's advanced sensing capabilities, enabling partners and allies to better identify and respond to threats through integrated situational awareness," said Dan Theisen, president of Advanced Products and Solutions at Raytheon. "This offering will provide a significant increase in survivability and mission effectiveness through unprecedented situational awareness, high‑resolution pilotage functions as well as passive missile detection, warning and tracking."
The RAIVEN family builds on Raytheon’s Multi‑Spectral Targeting System (MTS) heritage and incorporates artificial intelligence, hyperspectral imaging, and LiDAR to deliver enhanced targeting and battlespace awareness. Sensors are manufactured in McKinney, Texas, and additional flight tests are planned throughout 2026 to further validate the platform across air, ground, and sea missions.
The test comes amid a broader defense‑industry push for advanced sensing technologies driven by a global rearmament cycle. RTX has recently secured a $3.7 billion contract to supply Patriot GEM‑T interceptors to Ukraine and a $1.7 billion contract for the Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS), underscoring the company’s expanding footprint in air‑defense and surveillance markets.
By validating the RAIVEN Staring system in a real‑world flight environment, Raytheon strengthens its competitive position in the electro‑optical and infrared sensor market, positioning the company to offer a new capability to U.S. and allied forces and to capitalize on growing demand for zero‑illumination situational awareness.
