RTX Secures EASA Certification for GTF Advantage Engine, Expanding Airbus A320neo Fleet

RTX announced that its GTF Advantage engine has received type certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) on April 17, 2026, a key regulatory milestone that allows Pratt & Whitney to begin production deliveries and entry into service on the Airbus A320neo family later this year.

The GTF Advantage delivers 4–8% more thrust, an extended range, and up to double the time on wing compared with the current GTF model. These performance gains translate into lower fuel burn, higher payload capacity, and greater route flexibility for operators, positioning RTX to capture a larger share of the single‑aisle market as airlines modernize their fleets.

With EASA certification in place, RTX can accelerate its aftermarket pipeline and support margin expansion across its Collins Aerospace and Pratt & Whitney segments. The company has already invested nearly $1 billion in its North Carolina turbine airfoil facility and $200 million in a Georgia forging plant to meet the expected demand for the new engine. The GTF Advantage is fully interchangeable with existing GTF engines, enabling a phased transition for airlines and minimizing operational disruption.

Rick Deurloo, president of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney, said, "EASA certification marks another critical milestone for the GTF Advantage program, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to deliver value for our customers." He added, "With enhanced payload and range capability, and a more durable configuration that delivers up to double the time on wing, the GTF Advantage will be a game‑changer for operators."

The certification also addresses durability concerns that have affected earlier GTF models, restoring confidence among operators. RTX’s backlog of roughly $268 billion and its high‑margin aftermarket business provide a strong foundation for the company’s growth strategy. The GTF Advantage is expected to become the production standard for the A320neo family, with a full cutover anticipated around 2028, further solidifying RTX’s position in the competitive single‑aisle engine market.

The GTF Advantage’s compatibility with future sustainable aviation fuel specifications and its ability to enhance aircraft capability make it a strategic asset for RTX’s long‑term competitiveness in the evolving aviation landscape.
