EchoStar’s Hughes Network Systems announced that Air India has chosen its in‑flight connectivity solution to provide consistent Wi‑Fi across the airline’s wide‑body fleet. The contract covers Airbus A350‑1000 aircraft using Hughes’ Airbus HBC plus platform and Boeing 787‑8 and 777‑300ER aircraft using the RAVE Aerospace solution, and applies to an initial tranche of existing and new wide‑body aircraft in Air India’s fleet.

The win marks a significant milestone for EchoStar, expanding its satellite‑based connectivity portfolio into the airline industry and reinforcing its strategy to grow beyond traditional pay‑TV and enterprise markets. By offering a common connectivity platform across both Airbus and Boeing aircraft, Hughes positions Air India to deliver a home‑broadband‑like experience to passengers, potentially boosting the airline’s digital service offering and customer satisfaction. The deal also allows Hughes to leverage its JUPITER Ka‑band fabric and future low‑latency LEO capability for broader market reach.

Air India’s Chief Digital & Technology Officer, Dr. Satya Ramaswamy, said: “Always‑on broadband Internet connectivity is a fundamental expectation of today's digitally savvy consumers. Our strategic vision is to provide connectivity with home‑broadband like bandwidth and latency on Air India's international and domestic flights so that connecting from our flights feels the same as connecting from home.” He added: “In this journey, we are pleased to partner with Hughes as their global launch customer to offer an in‑flight connectivity service that takes into account the existing regulatory considerations and satellite coverage capabilities along the global flight paths of our wide body aircraft, with a roadmap to seamlessly upgrade to home‑broadband levels within the next two years.”

Hughes executive Ramesh Ramaswamy said: “At Hughes, we are committed to advancing in‑flight connectivity that empowers airlines like Air India, a leader in digital capabilities in the airline industry, to deliver seamless digital experiences for their passengers. Our innovative platform not only enhances passenger experience but also drives operational excellence, positioning Air India to deliver an exceptional customer experience.” The contract gives Hughes a competitive edge by offering a unified solution across two major aircraft manufacturers, a feature that differentiates it from other providers such as Panasonic Avionics, which Air India previously used.

EchoStar’s financial performance in 2025 was challenging, with a net loss of $14.50 billion compared to a $119.55 million loss in 2024, largely driven by non‑cash asset impairments. Revenue fell to $15.00 billion from $15.83 billion in 2024, and adjusted OIBDA declined to $1.49 billion from $1.63 billion. Despite these headwinds, the Air India contract represents a positive development, adding a high‑profile customer and reinforcing EchoStar’s strategy to diversify its revenue streams and leverage its satellite and terrestrial assets in new markets.

The deal underscores EchoStar’s broader strategic shift, which includes integrating its satellite footprint with DISH Network’s spectrum and network assets to offer converged services. It also aligns with the company’s recent acquisition of Anderson Connectivity, further strengthening its aviation capabilities. While the contract does not resolve EchoStar’s current financial challenges, it signals a potential growth trajectory in the rapidly expanding in‑flight connectivity market.
