SK Telecom announced a sweeping AI‑native transformation strategy on March 1, 2026 during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The plan calls for a 1 GW hyperscale data‑center partnership with Amazon Web Services, the development of a 1 trillion‑parameter AI model, and the launch of an AI‑powered customer‑experience platform that will replace legacy telecom services with AI‑driven value propositions.
The strategic shift follows a sharp decline in FY 2025 net income, which fell 73% year‑on‑year to KRW 375.1 billion after a major cybersecurity breach. The loss highlighted the need for a new growth engine, prompting SK Telecom to pivot toward AI infrastructure and services as a means to recover earnings and diversify revenue streams.
SK Telecom’s CEO, Jung Jai‑hun, said the company is “currently at a golden time of transformation, where the two tasks of ‘customer value innovation’ and ‘AI innovation’ intersect in a borderless, converged environment that goes beyond telecommunications.” The company aims to position South Korea among the world’s top three AI powers, leveraging partnerships with AWS, OpenAI, Nvidia, and domestic partner SK hynix to build a national AI ecosystem. Internally, SK Telecom is launching initiatives such as an AX Dashboard, an AI Board, and an AI playground to embed AI into corporate culture.
Jung Jai‑hun added, “To drive future growth, we must reinvent our way of working from the ground up. SKT will fundamentally transform its corporate culture to be centered around AI.” He further noted, “If we fail to adapt to the artificial intelligence (AI) era, we will fall behind and perish.” The CEO also emphasized the company’s focus on customers, stating, “We contemplate our past complacency rooted in our pride as the number one telecommunications company. We will return to the essence of the telecommunications business—our customers—and overhaul our communication infrastructure with a focus on AI.” He concluded, “AIDC can be seen as the heart of Korea, and hyperscale LLMs as the brain. By combining SKT’s AI capabilities with collaboration from domestic and global partners, we will lead true AI‑native transformation for Korean customers and enterprises.” Finally, he said, “MWC Barcelona 2026 will serve as a milestone for SK Telecom to show the world how we are bringing AI infrastructure, models and services into reality on the foundation of telecommunications.”
The announcement signals a significant realignment of SK Telecom’s competitive moat. By moving from a “dumb pipe” model to an AI‑infrastructure platform, the company seeks to capture new revenue streams from AI services, data‑center hosting, and enterprise solutions. The partnership with AWS and the development of a sovereign AI model also aim to reduce reliance on foreign technology and strengthen regulatory compliance in a highly regulated Korean market. While the shift requires substantial investment and cultural change, it positions SK Telecom to capitalize on the growing global demand for AI infrastructure and to support South Korea’s ambition to become a leading AI nation.
