CARFAX, a unit of S&P Global Mobility, reported that its free Vehicle Recall Search Service has performed more than 10 billion checks across the United States and has helped identify and facilitate the repair of over 30 million open safety recalls, covering more than half of all vehicles on U.S. roads.

The service, built in partnership with the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, allows state motor vehicle agencies, public safety departments, and inspection programs to query recall status during registration, titling and inspection transactions. Eight state DMVs—California, New York, Ohio, Arizona, Texas, Connecticut, Maryland, and Washington—along with Puerto Rico, currently participate in the program.

Despite the reach of the service, one in five vehicles still has an unfixed recall, underscoring the ongoing risk for drivers. By providing a no‑cost, easy‑to‑use tool, CARFAX is reducing the number of vehicles on the road with unresolved safety issues while simultaneously collecting valuable data that can be leveraged for other paid CARFAX products.

The milestone aligns with S&P Global Mobility’s strategy to expand its data and analytics footprint in the automotive value chain. The free service serves as a new channel for customer engagement and may drive traffic to CARFAX’s paid vehicle history reports and Car Care services, supporting potential revenue growth as the company prepares for a planned spin‑off of its mobility segment.

Faisal Hasan, Vice President of Data Acquisition at CARFAX, said, "This Vehicle Recall Search Service has now checked more than half of all vehicles on U.S. roads. Still, one in five vehicles still has an unfixed recall, an ongoing risk for drivers. We encourage more states to participate. There is more work to be done." John Bozzella, president and CEO of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, added, "When drivers know about recalls and get their vehicles fixed, road safety increases. Who isn’t for that? We can get even more vehicles checked if additional organizations, including state DMVs, sign up to use this no‑cost, easy‑to‑use vehicle recall service."
