Sasol Limited announced that it has received ISCC Plus certification from Germany’s TUV SUD for its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) produced at the Natref refinery, enabling the company to export the product to the European Union.
The certification confirms that Sasol’s SAF, which is made from cooking oil and vegetable oil, meets EU environmental and safety standards. The approval is based on the company’s feedstock‑agnostic Fischer‑Tropsch technology, which allows it to convert a variety of renewable feedstocks into high‑purity synthetic fuels.
Sasol has set a production roadmap that targets 1‑2 million liters of SAF in 2026, 16 million in 2027, and 100 million by 2030 from Natref alone. Including the Secunda complex, the company aims for 200 million liters by 2030, positioning it to capture a growing share of the EU market as the region moves toward a 6 % SAF blending ratio by 2030 and 70 % by 2050.
The certification unlocks a new revenue channel for Sasol and supports its broader strategy to diversify away from coal‑based products. It also signals that Sasol can deliver certified sustainable fuels at scale using existing assets in South Africa, strengthening confidence in its transition strategy and competitive standing in the global low‑carbon fuels space.
The EU’s Fit for 55 package and tightening SAF mandates create a tailwind for Sasol’s entry, while geopolitical disruptions in global jet fuel supplies—such as the Middle East conflict—have heightened the commercial viability of domestic SAF production.
"South Africa has a lot of used cooking oil which is being collected, taken to Durban and exported to Rotterdam in the EU, and they make it (SAF) there. Now, we will be able to make it in South Africa," said Sarushen Pillay, Sasol’s Executive Vice President for Strategy and Technology. "If we include Secunda then we are looking at 200 million litres of SAF by 2030." Pillay added, "This milestone demonstrates that Sasol can deliver certified sustainable fuels and chemicals at scale using existing assets in South Africa. Independent certification strengthens confidence in our transition strategy, our operating capability and our ability to compete in global low‑carbon markets."
