Shutterstock announced on March 19 2026 that it is expanding its licensed training datasets to include templates, fonts, long‑form video, premium metadata, and specialized podcast and science imagery, giving AI developers a broader rights‑cleared, multimodal data set for the full model‑training lifecycle.

The expansion positions Shutterstock as a data and infrastructure partner for AI companies, complementing its existing AI services and partnerships with OpenAI, Black Forest Labs, Runway, and ElevenLabs. The company projects the global AI training data market to reach $9 billion by 2030, and the new catalog is intended to capture a larger share of that growth.

Shutterstock’s Q4 2025 earnings report, released February 17 2026, showed a 12% year‑over‑year decline in quarterly revenue to $220.2 million and a net loss of $16.0 million. However, the report highlighted double‑digit growth in its Data, Distribution, and Services business for 2025, and the company’s full‑year 2025 revenue grew 6% to $989.9 million, driven largely by the expanding data licensing segment.

Daniel Mandell, Senior Vice President of Data Licensing and AI, said, “Generative AI models are not static; they must be continuously trained and refined to remain relevant, competitive, and accurate.” He added, “A continuous flow of fresh data has become as essential to AI infrastructure and ongoing retraining pipelines as compute power itself.”

No immediate market reaction to the dataset expansion has been reported, but the announcement comes amid ongoing regulatory scrutiny of Shutterstock’s pending merger with Getty Images, which has attracted attention from the U.S. Department of Justice and the UK Competition and Markets Authority.

By broadening its data offering, Shutterstock aims to strengthen its position in the rapidly growing AI training data market and diversify its revenue streams beyond traditional content licensing, positioning the company to benefit from the increasing demand for high‑quality, rights‑cleared data in generative AI development.
