Shutterstock today introduced a new app that lets users search for and license images, videos, music, and sound effects directly within the ChatGPT interface, eliminating the need to leave the conversational AI environment.

The app offers a seamless workflow for creators, marketers, and businesses, allowing them to discover commercial‑ready assets, preview usage rights, and complete licensing transactions without switching platforms. It integrates Shutterstock’s library of over 700 million assets, giving ChatGPT users instant access to a vast, rights‑cleared catalog that can be used in AI‑generated content and other creative projects.

This launch is a key milestone in Shutterstock’s broader AI strategy, which has already included an AI image generator, a data‑licensing program for model training, and a partnership with OpenAI that supplies Shutterstock content for training DALL‑E. By embedding its catalog inside ChatGPT, Shutterstock positions itself as the primary licensed‑content layer for AI‑native workflows, expanding its reach to the platform’s billion‑plus daily query volume.

Financially, Shutterstock’s 2023 full‑year revenue was $874.6 million, with the Content product line accounting for 84% ($737.3 million) and the Data, Distribution, and Services segment contributing 16% ($137.3 million). The company’s 2023 net income was $110.3 million, and its Adjusted EBITDA reached $240.8 million. The new app is expected to accelerate growth in the Data, Distribution, and Services segment, which grew 256% in 2023, by monetizing AI‑driven demand for licensed assets.

Paul Teall, Vice President of Marketplace Strategy, said, “Our customers trust Shutterstock as a leading source of high‑quality, licensable content, powered by sophisticated AI technology. This launch brings commercial confidence directly in ChatGPT, enabling teams to move from discovery to content production.”

The integration is likely to broaden Shutterstock’s customer base, deepen engagement with existing users, and create new revenue opportunities from AI‑centric workflows, reinforcing its competitive position in a market where AI platforms are becoming primary creative tools.
