STMicroelectronics has begun delivering STM32 microcontrollers that are manufactured in China, marking the first time the company has produced its general‑purpose STM32 chips in the country at volume.
The new production line is built in partnership with Huahong Semiconductor, a 15‑year partner that has been supplied with ST’s 40 nm embedded‑non‑volatile‑memory (eNVM) process. The wafers are produced by Huahong, while packaging and testing are handled by ST’s Shenzhen facility and local OSAT partners, ensuring that the Chinese‑made chips match the design, quality and performance of those produced in ST’s global fabs.
The move is part of ST’s dual‑supply‑chain strategy, which aims to provide a resilient local supply line while keeping identical product specifications. By localizing production, the company reduces exposure to geopolitical and tariff risks and positions itself to capture growing demand for microcontrollers in China’s automotive, industrial and consumer‑electronics markets, supporting its broader goal of diversifying revenue beyond traditional automotive cycles.
ST plans to extend local production to additional STM32 families, including the STM32H5 and STM32C5 series, by the end of 2026. The partnership with Huahong began in 2024, when ST transferred its 40 nm eNVM process to the Chinese partner with a 15‑year agreement.
Henry Cao, Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing for the China region, said, “Bringing STM32 MCUs to mass production in China is a core commitment of ST to its Chinese customers. In collaboration with Huahong, ST is bringing the very same market‑leading products to customers with a secure, reliable, and resilient local microcontroller supply chain. ST will continue to respond to the needs of its Chinese customers with greater speed and precision.”
Investors reacted negatively to the announcement, raising concerns about future growth potential.
