Nokia has been selected by Telefónica to deploy AI‑ready networking solutions in 17 new Edge data centers across Spain, with 12 already operational. The expansion broadens Telefónica’s edge infrastructure and supports AI, B2B, and telco‑cloud services.
The deployment will provide high‑speed, ultra‑low‑latency connectivity for compute and storage inside the Edge nodes and will connect those nodes to the wider network, enabling AI training and inference at the edge for healthcare, education, industry, and government applications.
Nokia will be the sole networking technology partner for Telefónica’s expanding Edge network, a move that simplifies operations, unifies architecture, and increases efficiency. The partnership builds on a successful pilot of three Edge data centers completed in 2024 and leverages Nokia’s 7220 Interconnect Router and 7750 Service Router.
Telefónica’s Q4 2025 earnings, released on February 24 2026, showed revenues of €9,174 million and adjusted EBITDA growth of 2.8 % in constant terms. The company met its 2025 commitments and provided guidance for 2026, underscoring confidence in its growth strategy. The new edge deployment aligns with Telefónica’s “Transform & Grow” strategy and its focus on data sovereignty and AI.
Sergio Sánchez, CTIO at Telefónica España, said the rollout aligns with the operator’s strategy to make edge cloud and AI main cornerstones of growth, strengthening technological sovereignty and enabling a more user‑centric digital ecosystem. José María Álvarez‑Pallete and Marc Murtra emphasized the role of AI, API, cloud, and edge computing in transforming the network into a “massively decentralised supercomputer.”
The partnership positions Nokia to capture new revenue streams from AI‑driven data centers, complementing its existing 5G business. It also supports Spain’s growing data center market, attracting investment from major players such as Blackstone and Amazon.
