Truist Financial Corp. has begun a pilot that lets its customers pay recurring bills—such as credit‑card, rent, and utility payments—directly through the Zelle peer‑to‑peer network. The pilot, announced on April 23, 2026, is part of Zelle’s “Zelle Forward” initiative to expand the network beyond person‑to‑person transfers.

The pilot is currently in an early testing phase with a small group of Truist employees. Participants are using the system to send and receive alias‑based requests for payment that settle in real time through The Clearing House. The program is designed to evaluate payment certainty and posting speed before a broader consumer rollout, though the exact launch window has not yet been disclosed.

Truist’s Q1 2026 earnings showed an earnings‑per‑share beat of $0.09 against a consensus of $0.00, driven by disciplined cost management and a 11.6% rise in non‑interest income. Revenue of $5.20 billion matched consensus but fell 0.4% from the prior quarter, reflecting a modest decline in loan‑originated income offset by stronger fee earnings. Management lowered its full‑year revenue guidance to a 4% growth range and increased its expense outlook, signaling caution amid a competitive deposit environment.

Zelle processed more than $1.2 trillion in 2025, its second consecutive trillion‑dollar year, and now serves over 2,300 financial institutions, covering 80% of U.S. bank and credit‑union accounts. The partnership places Truist among the first banks to use alias‑based real‑time payments for billers, a capability that could attract new customers and deepen existing relationships.

“The problem with bill pay isn’t speed — it’s certainty,” said Chris Ward, head of Enterprise Payments at Truist. “Early testing aims to demonstrate how real‑time confirmation and alias‑based payments can deliver clearer outcomes for consumers and more predictable flows for billers.” Denise Leonhard, general manager of Zelle, added, “Zelle® Forward is about pushing beyond what’s possible today and we are proud to partner with Truist on this latest effort. We’re focused on solving real problems – like the friction that comes with paying bills – and delivering a fast, reliable experience that consumers and businesses can count on.” The pilot aligns with Truist’s broader digital strategy, which emphasizes fee‑income growth, cost discipline, and expanding its payment footprint.
