Target announced that it will open its 2,000th store in Fuquay‑Varina, North Carolina, on March 15. The 148,000‑square‑foot location will include a CVS Pharmacy, a Starbucks Café, and a Disney Shop, underscoring the retailer’s focus on a “fun‑forward” shopping experience.
The new store is part of a broader expansion plan that includes more than 30 new locations this year and 300 by 2035. The plan is supported by a $5 billion capital‑expenditure program aimed at remodeling existing stores and enhancing digital fulfillment. The 2,000th store will also serve as a hub for next‑day delivery in 20 additional metro areas, expanding Target’s same‑day service network.
Target’s strategy to grow its physical footprint is intended to increase foot traffic, strengthen its competitive position against Walmart and Amazon, and drive long‑term revenue growth. By integrating stores as micro‑fulfillment hubs, Target can leverage its physical locations to accelerate digital orders and improve customer convenience.
Adrienne Costanzo, Chief Stores Officer, said, “Guests tell us all the time they want a Target closer to home, and this investment helps us do exactly that.” She added, “That means even more neighborhoods will get the full Target experience: trend‑forward style and value, technology that makes the trip effortless and awesome teams who deliver easy, inspiring and friendly moments every single day.” CEO Michael Fiddelke has emphasized that Target is “doubling down on physical retail to reverse declining sales” and that the new stores “give our teams the tools and environments to bring our merchandising strengths to life, create easier and more inspiring shopping experiences, and use technology to move smarter and faster every day.”
Investors have responded positively to the expansion narrative, reflecting confidence in Target’s strategy to blend physical and digital channels and to invest in customer experience.
