Talen Energy Corp. and X‑Energy Reactor Company, LLC entered into a Letter of Intent to evaluate the deployment of X‑Energy’s Xe‑100 small modular reactors (SMRs) in Pennsylvania and across the PJM Interconnection market. The agreement authorizes the two companies to conduct early‑stage project development activities, including feasibility studies, site evaluations and the creation of a project execution framework.
The LOI focuses on a phased approach: each Xe‑100 unit, rated at 80 MW and high‑temperature gas‑cooled, can be installed as part of a four‑to‑twelve‑unit plant, with every reactor capable of coming online independently. The partnership aligns with Talen’s “Powering the Future” strategy and its goal of expanding nuclear capacity in the Mid‑Atlantic region, where the company currently operates approximately 2.2 GW of nuclear generation.
X‑Energy’s pipeline now exceeds 11 GW of new nuclear capacity, and the Xe‑100’s modular design offers reduced water usage and flexible siting, making it attractive for the PJM market’s growing demand from data centers, electrification and onshoring of manufacturing. The collaboration positions both companies to address the region’s projected capacity shortfalls and to provide a clean, reliable baseload supply.
"Our agreement with Talen is an important step forward to strengthen baseload capacity and meet growing energy demands in the PJM market. Our small modular reactor technology is uniquely suited to meet these demand opportunities reliably and safely, with the scalability and flexibility to deploy across a range of project sites," said Dinkar Bhatia, Chief Commercial Officer of X‑Energy.
"Commercial nuclear energy is a proven carbon‑free energy source that provides for energy independence and diversification. We look forward to working with X‑Energy as part of our broader commitment to Powering the Future," added Terry Nutt, President of Talen Energy.
The partnership signals a strategic shift toward advanced nuclear technology, offering a scalable solution that can be deployed in phases to match demand growth. By leveraging X‑Energy’s proven SMR design, Talen can accelerate its nuclear expansion while mitigating the capital intensity and regulatory hurdles associated with traditional large‑scale reactors. The collaboration also positions the companies to capitalize on the PJM market’s need for reliable, low‑carbon baseload power as the region’s electricity consumption continues to rise.
