Toyota Motor Corporation announced that it will become an equal shareholder in the fuel‑cell joint venture cellcentric, a partnership that also includes Volvo Group and Daimler Truck. The agreement is currently non‑binding and will be formalized through a memorandum of understanding, with the final legal structure subject to board and regulatory approvals.

Under the arrangement, Toyota will collaborate on the development, production and commercialization of fuel‑cell unit cells and related control systems. The company brings more than 30 years of fuel‑cell development and manufacturing expertise, while Volvo and Daimler Truck contribute their extensive commercial‑vehicle supply chains and market reach.

The partnership marks a strategic shift for Toyota, extending its hydrogen‑fuel‑cell technology beyond passenger vehicles into the heavy‑duty commercial sector. By joining forces with two leading heavy‑duty manufacturers, Toyota positions itself to accelerate the deployment of fuel‑cell systems for trucks, buses and stationary power applications, supporting the European Green Deal and Japan’s hydrogen society initiatives.

"We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to soon be joining Daimler Truck and Volvo Group as partners in building a hydrogen society," said Koji Sato, President and CEO of Toyota. "Cellcentric, which possesses deep expertise in commercial fields together with Toyota’s over 30 years of fuel‑cell development in the passenger car sector, can combine their strengths to deliver one of the world‑leading fuel cell systems for heavy commercial vehicles. Toyota will continue to contribute to realising a hydrogen society alongside like‑minded partners." Karin Rådström, President & CEO of Daimler Truck, added, "We are proud that Toyota plans to join cellcentric as a shareholder. This will enable us to strengthen development and further scale hydrogen technology, which we believe complements battery‑electric drives in decarbonising transport." Martin Lundstedt, President and CEO of Volvo Group, said, "We are thrilled to explore this collaboration with Toyota, so that we through cellcentric can accelerate and create critical mass for hydrogen applications. This is an important signal to customers, suppliers, and others in the ecosystem."

The announcement is a material event that could reshape the competitive landscape of the heavy‑duty hydrogen market. While specific financial terms and a definitive timeline for the final binding agreement have not been disclosed, the partnership signals Toyota’s strong commitment to hydrogen as a multi‑pathway strategy for decarbonisation and positions cellcentric to become a leading manufacturer of fuel‑cell systems for commercial applications.
