Trimble Inc. has added Anthropic’s Claude large‑language model to its SketchUp 3‑D modeling platform, enabling users to generate building massing models, landscapes, and furniture from natural‑language text or speech prompts. The new SketchUp Connector builds geometry in a cloud SketchUp session and iteratively verifies dimensions, while a single chat tracks version history and allows users to refine models by describing changes or pasting screenshots.
The integration requires a Claude account and a Trimble ID for authentication. Once a model is complete, the Connector creates a 2‑D preview thumbnail and provides a direct download link to the .skp file, which can be opened in SketchUp for Web, Desktop, iPad or iPhone. The free entitlement allows users to save up to 30 models before a subscription is required.
Trimble’s announcement is part of its Connect & Scale strategy, which seeks to embed AI across its product portfolio to lower the learning curve for new users and accelerate design workflows. “The learning curve and time it takes for professionals to transfer a vision to a digital model has traditionally been the biggest barrier to 3‑D modeling. Natural language prompts and the power of AI make it easy for anyone to get started and excel, including inexperienced and non‑traditional 3‑D design users, bringing us closer to our ‘3D for everyone’ goal,” said Chris Cronin, vice president and general manager of architecture and design solutions.
Rob Painter, Trimble’s CEO, added, “We see AI as a force multiplier that accelerates value delivery along this entire flywheel. Our Connect and Scale strategy has brought us to this point. We are building an industry ecosystem aimed at breaking down data silos and empowering our customers to make smarter decisions, collaborate effectively and work faster. By embedding AI into our solutions and enabling improved data flow, we’re taking the next steps towards unlocking the power of connected data.” Mark Schwartz, senior vice president of AECO software, described the agentic AI platform as the “engine” that will help Trimble, its partners, and customers extract more value from their data and solutions.
Market reaction to the announcement was mixed. Some analysts highlighted the AI integration as a positive development that could strengthen Trimble’s competitive position, while others expressed caution due to broader market conditions and the need to see how the new feature performs in practice.
The Claude‑powered SketchUp launch positions Trimble as a leader in AI‑driven design tools for the architecture, engineering, construction and design sector, reinforcing its broader strategy to embed AI across its product suite and potentially accelerating future growth.
