Tesla Secures UK Electricity Supply Licence, Expanding Energy Business

Tesla Energy Ventures Limited secured an Ofgem electricity supply licence effective March 11, 2026, allowing it to sell electricity to households and businesses across Great Britain – England, Scotland and Wales, but not Northern Ireland. This is the first time Tesla has been granted a utility licence in the UK, marking a significant regulatory milestone for the company.

The licence expands Tesla’s energy division beyond its existing generation licence held by Tesla Motors Limited since June 2020. Ofgem’s seven‑month assessment covered financial resilience and operational readiness, ensuring Tesla can meet the regulatory requirements for retail supply.

With the licence, Tesla can offer electricity directly, leveraging its battery storage and solar generation assets. The company already operates large Megapack projects in the UK, including the 196‑MWh Pillswood plant and a 1‑GWh project in Eccles, Scotland, and uses its Autobidder AI software to manage grid services.

Tesla plans to build a virtual power plant in the UK, similar to its Texas model, and already runs a VPP partnership with Octopus Energy for Powerwall owners. The new licence positions Tesla to monetize its battery and solar assets, compete with established utilities such as EDF, E.ON, Octopus Energy and British Gas, and provide customers with integrated vehicle‑to‑grid services.

The regulatory approval signals Tesla’s commitment to becoming a full energy platform in Europe. By integrating vehicle, battery and power generation, Tesla can create new revenue streams, diversify beyond automotive sales, and support the UK’s net‑zero and clean‑power goals. The licence also opens opportunities for grid‑stability services and customer‑owned energy solutions.
