TotalEnergies SE and construction‑materials group Holcim opened a 31‑megawatt floating solar power plant in Obourg, Belgium, on Friday, March 20, 2026. The facility sits on a former chalk quarry that has been converted into a lake and is expected to generate roughly 30 GWh of renewable electricity each year, making it the largest floating solar installation in Europe dedicated to self‑consumption.

The plant’s scale and location illustrate a strategic use of land: by deploying panels on a water body, the project maximises space while minimising environmental impact. The solar array will supply clean power to Holcim’s industrial sites, directly supporting the company’s GO4ZERO net‑zero cement initiative and its broader goal of becoming carbon‑neutral by 2029.

For TotalEnergies, the project aligns with its strategy to broaden its integrated power business and accelerate its transition to cleaner energy sources. The 31‑MW asset adds a flexible, low‑emission power source to a portfolio that already includes gas‑fired and battery‑storage projects, helping the company move toward its target of 100 GW of gross renewable power generation capacity by 2030.

Holcim’s participation demonstrates how heavy industry can decarbonise by coupling renewable generation with carbon‑capture and low‑carbon fuels. The floating solar plant supplies a steady, low‑carbon power supply for cement production and other manufacturing operations, reinforcing Holcim’s sustainability commitments and providing a tangible example of industrial decarbonisation.

While no immediate market reaction data are available, the project signals a strong commitment from both companies to renewable energy and industrial decarbonisation, potentially influencing investor perception of their long‑term sustainability trajectories.

Olivier Greiner, Managing Director Retail Power & Gas Belgium at TotalEnergies, said, "We are delighted to inaugurate this floating solar power plant, which demonstrates TotalEnergies' teams' ability to innovate to meet the needs of our partner Holcim, whom we support along with other industrial customers in their efforts to decarbonize their operations."
