TotalEnergies has brought the Mabruk oil field in Libya back into production, delivering its first output in more than a decade. The new production unit, which began operating on February 28 2026, is designed to produce 25,000 barrels per day and was built after construction started in May 2024.

The field had been idle since 2015, when militant activity damaged infrastructure and forced a shutdown. TotalEnergies holds a 37.5 % interest in the asset and has operated in Libya since 1956, celebrating its 70th anniversary in the country this year. The restart is part of a broader effort to revive Libya’s oil sector after years of disruption.

"This restart illustrates our long‑term commitment in Libya, as we celebrate TotalEnergies' 70th anniversary in the country this year," said Julien Pouget, Middle East and North Africa Director for Exploration & Production. "This project, which follows TotalEnergies' recent announcements regarding the extension of the Waha concessions, brings low‑cost, low‑emissions oil production in line with the Company's strategy, and contributes to our objective of 3 % annual production growth per year until 2030."

The new unit adds a substantial volume to TotalEnergies’ upstream portfolio and supports the company’s 3 % annual production growth target through 2030. By delivering low‑cost, low‑emissions output, the restart improves cash‑flow generation and strengthens the firm’s strategic footprint in North Africa, where it seeks to diversify its production mix and enhance resilience against regional headwinds.

The restart follows the extension of the Waha concessions and aligns with Libya’s broader oil‑production revival. TotalEnergies’ focus on low‑cost, low‑emissions projects positions it to capture value in a market that has historically been a key contributor to the company’s upstream earnings.

The successful re‑activation of Mabruk demonstrates TotalEnergies’ operational execution capability and reinforces its long‑term commitment to Libya, setting the stage for future expansions in the region.
