United Airlines will operate a record 750 daily flights from Chicago O’Hare during the summer of 2026, a figure that exceeds the next largest competitor by 200 flights and represents the highest number of departures by any single airline at the airport. The expanded schedule will serve 222 destinations, including 47 international cities across Europe, Asia, and South America and 175 U.S. cities, underscoring United’s ambition to deepen its global reach from the Midwest hub.

The airline is adding five new nonstop routes to Midwest markets—Champaign/Urbana (CMI) and Kalamazoo (AZO) beginning April 30, 2026, and Lansing (LAN), La Crosse (LSE), and Bloomington/Normal (BMI) beginning May 7, 2026—each operated with 50‑seat regional jets and four daily flights. These routes restore service to markets that United previously served and expand connectivity for communities that rely on O’Hare for national and international travel.

United will hire approximately 2,500 additional employees at O’Hare before the end of 2026 to support the increased traffic. The airline is also expanding United Club locations and redesigning its Polaris lounge, while rolling out in‑flight technology upgrades such as seat‑back screens, larger overhead bins, Bluetooth connectivity, and free Starlink Wi‑Fi for MileagePlus members, all aimed at enhancing the customer experience during the busy summer period.

The schedule launch is a direct response to American Airlines’ aggressive expansion at O’Hare, a battle for gate access and prime operating slots that has intensified over the past year. United’s on‑time performance and low cancellation rates in 2025—leading the industry at ORD—provide a strong operational foundation for the expansion. The move is also backed by robust financial results: United reported record revenue of $15.4 billion and $59.1 billion for Q4 2025 and the full year, respectively, and guided for 2026 adjusted EPS of $12‑$14, signaling confidence in sustaining growth while managing costs.

Management emphasized the strategic importance of the expansion. Vice President Omar Idris said the growth “highlights our commitment to invest in our network, customers and hiring in the city we call home.” CEO Scott Kirby vowed to “draw a line in the sand” against American Airlines, while Senior Vice President Patrick Quayle noted that the new schedule “builds a network that our passengers want to fly.” Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker praised the expansion for boosting the state’s economy and supporting Chicago’s tourism and hospitality sectors.

United will also operate daily flights to Guadalajara, Mexico, from June 8‑27, 2026, to serve fans attending the FIFA World Cup, and will provide nonstop service from Chicago to all 16 host cities. The 750‑flight schedule represents a 20% increase over the 541 daily departures averaged in 2025, reflecting United’s strategy to capture market share and reinforce its position as the third‑largest U.S. hub.

The expansion delivers multiple strategic benefits: it expands United’s network footprint, strengthens its competitive position against American Airlines, leverages its operational excellence to support higher traffic volumes, and is underpinned by strong financial performance that enables significant investment in people and customer experience. Together, these factors position United to capture additional market share, improve customer satisfaction, and sustain growth through the summer and beyond.
