Uber and Hertz’s affiliate Oro Mobility announced a partnership to provide day‑to‑day vehicle asset management for Uber’s autonomous robotaxi fleet of Lucid vehicles in the San Francisco Bay Area. Oro Mobility will handle charging, maintenance, repairs, cleaning, and depot staffing, allowing Uber to concentrate on its platform operations while leveraging Hertz’s long‑standing fleet‑management expertise.

The deal is a key step in Uber’s strategy to accelerate its robotaxi launch. Uber has committed more than $10 billion to autonomous vehicle development, including equity stakes and purchase commitments for thousands of Lucid vehicles. By outsourcing fleet operations, Uber can scale its hybrid network—combining driver‑led and autonomous rideshare services—more quickly and efficiently.

Hertz is using the partnership as part of a broader pivot to fleet‑management services. The company carries a $19.3 billion debt load and generated $8.5 billion in revenue last year, with a gross profit margin of roughly 14%. “Hertz has spent over a century mastering complex fleet operations at scale, and Oro is how we put that expertise to work in the next era of mobility,” said Gil West, CEO of Hertz.

Lucid’s midsize platform will serve as the vehicle foundation for Uber’s robotaxi program, and the cars are equipped with Nuro’s Level 4 autonomous driving technology. Uber’s commitment to purchase at least 35,000 Lucid vehicles underscores the importance of this partnership for both companies’ long‑term growth plans. “Partnering with Hertz’s Oro Mobility will help us continue to bring the best autonomous technology onto the Uber platform and accelerate the transition to a hybrid network in which both driver‑led and autonomous rideshare operations can scale and serve communities reliably and efficiently,” said Andrew Macdonald, President and COO of Uber.

Regulatory developments in California add a new layer of complexity. Effective July 1, 2026, state law will allow law enforcement to cite autonomous vehicle companies for traffic violations. Uber and Hertz will need to adapt their operations to comply with these rules while maintaining safety and reliability standards.

The partnership represents a significant milestone for both Uber and Hertz, positioning them to capitalize on the growing autonomous mobility market and reflecting a broader industry shift toward integrated, technology‑driven fleet solutions.
