Uber Technologies and Nvidia announced an expansion of their autonomous‑vehicle partnership that will launch a fleet of Level‑4 robotaxis powered by Nvidia’s DRIVE Hyperion software and the Alpamayo AI model. The rollout will begin in Los Angeles and San Francisco in the first half of 2027 and will scale to 28 cities across North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia by 2028.

The partnership builds on earlier pilot programs and positions Uber as a key demand layer for autonomous vehicles, while Nvidia gains a large, global platform to deploy its autonomous‑driving stack. By leveraging Nvidia’s advanced reasoning‑based AI, Uber can accelerate the deployment of driverless rides without building the technology in‑house, aligning with its asset‑light strategy.

The phased deployment strategy—starting with data‑collection vehicles, moving to operator‑supervised launches, and ultimately full Level‑4 operations—provides a cautious path that balances speed with safety and regulatory compliance. This approach mirrors the industry’s broader trend toward incremental scaling of autonomous services.

"The 'ChatGPT moment' for physical AI has arrived—robotic systems can now reason about the complexities of the physical world. Uber is building one of the world's most expansive autonomous ride‑hailing platforms. We are delighted to connect NVIDIA's large ecosystem of robotaxi‑ready partners to the Uber network to bring the magic of robotaxis to cities worldwide," said Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA.

"Autonomous technology holds enormous promise to make transportation safer, more reliable, and more accessible. By expanding our partnership with NVIDIA and combining advanced AI with Uber's global network and operating experience, we are laying the foundation for an increasingly multi‑player AV world, ensuring broad commercialization and helping to bring robotaxi service to more riders over time," said Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber.

The announcement has been well received by investors, reflecting confidence in Uber’s platform‑led approach to autonomous mobility and Nvidia’s leadership in AI hardware and software for self‑driving vehicles.
