UL Solutions announced the launch of an enhanced large‑scale fire testing program for battery energy storage systems (BESS). The program builds on the sixth edition of ANSI/CAN/UL 9540A and is designed to replicate real‑world fire scenarios in large‑scale, installation‑level configurations such as outdoor containerized systems, indoor battery rooms, and stacked enclosures.

The testing protocol intentionally ignites a fire within a BESS enclosure and observes its development under realistic conditions, evaluating fire spread between units, potential ignition of nearby structures, and the performance of active and passive fire protection features. Detailed reports are produced for code authorities and fire departments, providing data that can be used to assess layouts, separation distances, and protection strategies with greater confidence.

By mirroring actual installation layouts, the program enables designers to justify alternative designs, meet permitting and code requirements, and enhance safety for communities increasingly deploying battery storage near residential and commercial sites. "Battery energy storage systems are being deployed at larger scales and closer to where people live and work. This testing gives authorities and fire departments practical data they can use to evaluate layouts, separation distances and fire protection strategies with greater confidence," said Wesley Kwok, vice president and general manager of UL Solutions’ Energy and Industrial Automation group.

The initiative underscores UL Solutions’ role as a critical gatekeeper for the growing electrification and data‑center megatrends that drive demand for safer energy storage solutions. The new program positions the company to support the expanding BESS market, address evolving safety challenges, and influence industry safety standards and practices.

The launch of the enhanced testing program represents a significant operational milestone for UL Solutions, expanding its portfolio of safety services and reinforcing its leadership in applied safety science for the energy transition.
