Upwork Inc. introduced a new app inside ChatGPT on April 9 2026 that lets businesses describe project needs, discover relevant talent, and draft job posts directly within the AI platform. The integration brings Upwork’s AI work agent Uma to ChatGPT, enabling users to scope projects, generate contracts, and begin work without leaving the chat interface.

The app taps into Upwork’s global marketplace of more than 18 million professionals across 130 categories and 10 000 skills, allowing solopreneurs, small‑ and medium‑sized businesses, and larger teams to accelerate hiring and increase the volume of work routed to the platform.

Strategically, the launch creates a new acquisition channel by leveraging the millions of daily ChatGPT users. Upwork’s management highlighted the opportunity: Peter Sanborn said, "Human expertise paired with AI is transforming work, and this integration brings the Upwork Marketplace directly into one of the tools millions of people use to get work started." He added, "You can now quickly progress from an idea in ChatGPT to hiring the right expert on Upwork in just a few steps, turning conversations into real work outcomes." OpenAI’s Chaya Nayak echoed the sentiment, stating, "We're excited to partner with Upwork and make it easier for anyone to build a business—connecting them with the talent they need, on the platforms they use every day." She also noted, "For many people, ChatGPT is where you can explore ideas, solve problems, and move work forward."

Financial context shows that Upwork’s Q4 2025 revenue reached $198.4 million, a 4% year‑over‑year increase, and adjusted EBITDA stood at $52.9 million, a 27% margin. Full‑year 2025 revenue was $787.8 million, up 2% from the prior year, and the company reported that AI‑related work on its platform grew more than 50% to an annualized $300 million+. Share repurchases totaled $136 million in 2025, underscoring a commitment to shareholder returns.

Investors focused on the Q1 2026 guidance miss, which fell short of consensus revenue guidance of $192‑197 million versus $200.5 million expected, and EPS guidance of $0.26‑0.28 versus $0.34 expected. This highlights that near‑term financial outlook can outweigh product‑launch enthusiasm in market perception.

Future plans include additional features for the ChatGPT app later in 2026, such as project scoping and work‑delivery capabilities, further integrating AI into Upwork’s workflow.
