Eco Wave Power Global AB completed a feasibility study for a wave‑energy power station at the Port of Ngqura in South Africa, identifying the breakwater as capable of supporting roughly 8.3 MW of installed capacity. The assessment evaluated site conditions, wave resource availability, and a preliminary system configuration, confirming the port’s suitability for an onshore wave energy deployment and marking the first such project on the African continent.
The study adds about 8.3 MW to Eco Wave Power’s global pipeline, which now totals 404.7 MW. The company’s strategy focuses on expanding in regions with strong coastal resources and high renewable‑energy demand, and the South African milestone aligns with that objective by opening a new geographic market.
Eco Wave Power and Africa Great Future Development Ltd (AGFDL) will review the findings together and jointly evaluate project structuring, regulatory pathways, and development timelines. Discussions are also underway for a potential second site near East London, indicating a broader commitment to the region.
The project represents a significant step toward diversifying Eco Wave Power’s portfolio and contributing to South Africa’s need for clean, reliable power amid persistent energy shortages. By entering Africa, the company positions itself to support the country’s decarbonization goals and to accelerate its ambition of becoming the first profitable wave‑energy company worldwide.
Historically, Eco Wave Power has reported net losses and negative operating cash flow, but the company has focused on financial efficiency, with operating expenses decreasing and cash reserves increasing as of December 31 2024. The firm recorded its first revenues from a wave‑energy project agreement in 2024, underscoring progress toward commercial viability.
"This feasibility study marks an important milestone in our entry into the African market," said Inna Braverman, Founder and CEO of Eco Wave Power. "The results demonstrate meaningful potential at the Port of Ngqura, and we look forward to working closely with our partners to assess how this project could progress in a responsible and commercially viable manner."
"This study provides a solid technical foundation for further discussions," said Wilfred Emmanuel‑Gottlieb, CEO of AGFDL. "We will now carefully evaluate the results and, together with Eco Wave Power, determine the most appropriate path forward."
