Woodside Energy Group Settles Greenpeace Lawsuit in Federal Court

Woodside Energy Group Ltd. announced that a federal court dismissed a lawsuit filed by Greenpeace Australia Pacific on April 22 2026. The dismissal was by consent of both parties, with each side bearing its own costs, and does not represent a court ruling on the merits of the allegations.

Greenpeace said the outcome was a win because Woodside changed the way it presented its carbon‑emission plans during the litigation. The organization alleged that Woodside had misrepresented its 2022 emissions‑reduction target, which was largely achieved through carbon offsets, and that its “net zero by 2050” goal excluded Scope 3 emissions that account for more than 90 % of the company’s total emissions.

Woodside welcomed the dismissal but declined to comment further, noting that the proceedings were terminated by mutual consent. The company has previously adjusted its public disclosures, removing a “Net zero by 2050 or sooner” banner from its website in July 2025.

The settlement removes a potential regulatory and reputational risk for Woodside, but the company remains under scrutiny for its environmental reporting. The case follows a similar outcome for Santos in February 2026 and a discontinued lawsuit by the Australian Conservation Foundation over Woodside’s Scarborough gas project, underscoring the broader climate‑litigation landscape in Australia.

No market reaction data was reported following the dismissal, and analysts have not issued new guidance related to the settlement.
