Walmart announced a major investment to remodel 650 of its U.S. stores and to open 20 new locations through the end of 2026 and into early 2027, a move designed to refresh the shopping experience and support the retailer’s e‑commerce fulfillment strategy.

The remodels will feature wider aisles, expanded pickup and delivery options—including express delivery—updated pharmacies and vision centers, and new digital touchpoints. Neighborhood Markets will receive expanded deli and hot‑bar selections, improved lighting and fixtures, pharmacy delivery options, and upgraded areas for fulfilling online grocery orders.

The investment reflects Walmart’s focus on financially stressed shoppers. A PYMNTS study shows that 56% of high‑stress online grocery shoppers choose Walmart versus 50% of low‑stress shoppers, and Walmart holds a 37% share of in‑store purchases among high‑stress shoppers compared with 26% among low‑stress shoppers.

Each remodel is a multimillion‑dollar project, with the company targeting completion through 2026 and early 2027. The initiative aligns with Walmart’s broader goal of using its 4,611 U.S. stores as fulfillment nodes and of growing operating income faster than sales.

President and CEO Doug McMillon highlighted that expanding assortment and improving the store experience drives growth, noting that more customers are finding what they need. The remodels are expected to strengthen customer loyalty and support long‑term profitability.

The announcement underscores Walmart’s commitment to investing in its physical footprint while optimizing its store count, positioning the retailer to capture market share across income segments and reinforce its everyday low‑price promise.
