Westport Fuel Systems has started production at its expanded Cambridge, Ontario plant and its new Changzhou, China hydrogen innovation center, marking a significant expansion of its high‑pressure control manufacturing footprint.
The Cambridge facility, part of the North American Innovation Hub, will produce GFI‑branded high‑pressure regulators, valves and pressure‑relief devices for hydrogen, compressed natural gas and renewable natural gas applications used in commercial vehicles, buses, trains and stationary power generation. The Changzhou plant will provide local capacity for the same component family, addressing China’s rapid hydrogen fleet growth.
The move aligns with Westport’s strategy to scale its high‑pressure controls business and reinforce its position in the global alternative‑fuel market. Initial GFI‑branded products shipped to customers in December 2025, and both sites are scheduled to ramp up through the first quarter of 2026. CEO Dan Sceli said the expansion “enhances our capacity to meet rising global demand for natural gas and hydrogen advanced fuel technologies and reinforces our regional manufacturing excellence.”
Westport’s expansion comes as the company continues to focus on its core heavy‑duty and alternative‑fuel systems after divesting its light‑duty segment. The company’s Q3 2025 results showed a revenue decline but an improved gross margin of 31% versus 14% in Q3 2024, driven by higher‑margin engineering services. The new facilities are expected to support the company’s long‑term growth trajectory in high‑pressure controls and systems.
China remains the largest hydrogen commercial vehicle market, with sales of hydrogen buses and trucks exceeding those of all other regions combined in 2024. By adding production capacity in both North America and China, Westport aims to reduce supply‑chain lead times and capture a larger share of the growing hydrogen and natural‑gas markets.
