Uber has increased its ownership stake in autonomous‑driving company WeRide Inc. to 5.82%, a transaction valued at roughly $159 million based on the company’s closing share price. The increase follows Uber’s $100 million equity injection in May 2025 and confirms the ride‑hailing platform’s confidence in WeRide’s global robotaxi strategy.

The stake increase was disclosed in a Form 6‑K filing on April 1 2026 and was reported by TechCrunch on April 2. It strengthens the existing partnership that has already enabled fully driverless robotaxi operations in Dubai (launched March 31) and Singapore (launched April 1), and provides WeRide with additional capital to expand its fleet and technology development.

WeRide reported record full‑year 2025 revenue of RMB684.6 million, up 90 % year‑over‑year, and its Middle East subsidiary achieved operational profitability in 2025. As of March 31 2026, the company’s market capitalization was approximately $2.74 billion, down from $4.54 billion at its Nasdaq IPO in October 2024.

The announcement was well received by investors, reflecting confidence in WeRide’s technology and Uber’s asset‑light autonomous strategy. The stake increase signals deeper integration of WeRide’s robotaxi services into Uber’s platform, potentially expanding Uber’s driverless fleet without large capital outlay.

The partnership aligns with Uber’s broader autonomous vehicle strategy, which includes collaborations with Rivian, Pony.ai, and Zoox. By holding a significant passive stake, Uber can influence WeRide’s deployment while keeping costs low, positioning Uber to capture a share of the growing robotaxi market.
