Volkswagen has begun mass production of the ID.UNYX 08, its first all‑electric SUV jointly developed with XPeng, at the company’s Hefei plant in China. The launch, announced on March 13 2026, marks a key milestone in Volkswagen’s “In China, for China” strategy and the first production‑ready model built under the partnership.
The ID.UNYX 08 is built on XPeng’s “Edward” platform and incorporates the company’s Turing AI chips, an 800‑volt architecture, and CATL batteries. By leveraging XPeng’s advanced technology, Volkswagen has cut its development cycle by roughly 30 % and accelerated the time from concept to production to just 24 months, a significant speed‑up in the highly competitive Chinese EV market.
The partnership gives Volkswagen a new revenue stream through licensing and production agreements while expanding XPeng’s manufacturing footprint. The joint venture also positions both companies to compete more effectively against local leaders such as BYD and Geely, whose market share gains have pressured Volkswagen’s sales in recent years.
Ralf Brandstätter, Volkswagen Group board member for China, said the “in China, for China” strategy is delivering results and that the ID.UNYX 08 launch represents the Group’s largest electric‑vehicle offensive in China. XPeng CEO He Xiaopeng added that the vehicle’s entry into series production is a tangible outcome of the trust‑based collaboration, combining strengths for long‑term value.
Volkswagen plans to introduce more than 20 new electric and hybrid models in China in 2026 and aims for roughly 50 NEV models by 2030. A second jointly developed model is expected later in 2026, further expanding the partnership’s scope and reinforcing Volkswagen’s commitment to a China‑centric product strategy.
